Etymology
As the historian Inca Garcilaso de la Vega ( 1609 ) points out: “The word galpon is not from the universal language of Peru (that is, Quechua ); it must have [come] from the islands of Barlovento ( Canary Islands ): the Spaniards introduced it along with many other words. It means a large hall . Inca kings had such huge halls that they served as an arena for festivities during rainy weather, when festivities could not be arranged in squares; and that's enough comments. ” [2]
