Gomatropin hydrobromide (Homatropini hydrobromidum) is an anticholinergic, tropic ester of mandelic acid hydrobromide.
Synonyms: Homatropinum hydrobromicum, Homatropine hydrobromide.
General Information
It turns out in a semi-synthetic way.
Flavourless white crystalline powder, easily soluble in water (1: 6), difficult - in alcohol. The solutions are tindalized for 1 h at + 60–65 ° С 5 times or at + 75–80 ° С 3 times, or they are prepared aseptically.
In structure and pharmacological properties it is close to atropine ; differs from the latter in lesser activity and shorter duration of action.
It is used in the form of 0.25-0.5-1% aqueous solution mainly in ophthalmic practice as a means of causing pupil dilatation and accommodation paralysis. The expansion of the pupil occurs quickly and passes through 10-20 hours.
A prolonged preparation is also available - a solution of homatropine hydrobromide 0.25% with methyl cellulose (Solutio Homatropini hydrobromidi 0.25% cum Methylcelluloso). Colorless transparent or slightly opalescent liquid; pH 4.0-6.0; in bottles of 5 and 10 ml.
