Biography

He studied at Duke University , New School and the School of Law at New York University .

He founded the business magazine Institutional Investor ( 1965 ), which soon reached the level of 150,000 subscribers and made its founder a millionaire [3] . Until 1984, he combined the duties of its owner, publisher and editor-in-chief. Having sold the publication for 72 million dollars, until 1990 he remained its publisher and afterwards continued to serve as editor-in-chief for a further three years.

In the mid-1960s, he became interested in the music of Gustav Mahler , and this hobby gradually began to occupy the bulk of his life. He founded the Kaplan Foundation, dedicated to his research and promotion. In particular, he focused on the Second Symphony of the composer: he acquired its author’s manuscript, which he published in facsimile in 1986 , and learned to conduct in order to perform this particular work. In 1982 he made his debut as a conductor with the American Symphony Orchestra at an unofficial concert for the participants of the International Monetary Fund summit [3] . He performed with Mahler's Second Symphony with many leading orchestras of the world. In 1996, Kaplan with the London Symphony Orchestra opened with the performance of the Second Symphony the program of one of the most prestigious music festivals in the world - Salzburg . On December 9, 2008, Kaplan conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra on the centennial of the premiere of the symphony performed by one of the band's predecessors, the New York Symphony Orchestra , under the direction of the author. Kaplan also recorded the symphony twice - with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1987 and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002 ; the first of these records was sold in quantities exceeding the sales of the same symphony with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein , Pierre Boulez and Claudio Abbado [3] . Among Kaplan's other projects is the Mahler Album released by him, the composer's biography with abundant illustrations. In 1997 ], he conducted a cycle of 13 weekly broadcasts dedicated to Maler, which was broadcast by 350 different US radio stations [4] .

Among professional musicians, Kaplan’s activities are seriously criticized: the musicians of the orchestras that performed under his command speak of him as mediocrity, not only not technically prepared for work with the world's leading orchestras, but also incapable of complying with the spiritual greatness of the work performed [5] . The rejection of professionals, however, is combined with the enthusiasm of music lovers [6] . The business consultant Bodo Schäfer in his book “Laws of Winners” cites Kaplan as an example of a person who managed to realize his dream. It is reported that in 1994, after the performance of Kaplan at the head of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, an equally fanatical fan of Mahler, then Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating, addressed him with an enthusiastic speech [7] .
