The Duchy of Auvergne ( fr. Duché d'Auvergne ) is a duchy-peerstvo in France, formed from the former royal territory of Auvergne, confiscated by King Philip II Augustus in 1209 from Count Auvergne Guy II of Auvergne . In 1225, the territory of the future duchy of Auvergne with the title of count was given by King Louis VIII Leo to his son Alphonse Poitiers , after whose death he returned to the royal domain.
In 1360, King John II the Good created the duchy of Auvergne for his third son, Jean Berry . After his death, the duchy through marriage passed to the dukes of de Bourbon . After the death of Duke Pierre I in 1503, the rights of his daughter Suzanne to the inheritance were disputed by the famous horse king Carl Bourbon , Count de Montpensier. Wanting to reconcile both sides, Louis XII married them.
Because Charles entered into an alliance with Emperor Charles V , his possessions were confiscated in 1523 by King Francis I. Later, the legacy of Suzanne de Bourbon, who died childless, was disputed by Louise of Savoy , the mother of King Francis I , as the closest relative of the deceased (she was the daughter of Margarita de Bourbon and the granddaughter of Charles I of Bourbon and Susanna was a cousin). The Duchy of Auvergne in 1527 was transferred to her by Francis I, along with the Duchies of Berry, Nemur and Angouleme. After her death, the duchy was annexed to the royal domain.
Later, the future king of France, Charles X, wore the title of Duke of Auvergne.
