Biography
In 1914 he graduated with honors from high school. The following year he entered St. Petersburg University at the natural branch of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. But in 1916 he entered the Military Medical Academy and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the piano class of Professor L.V. Nikolaev . At the same time, she is engaged in a conducting class with Professor E. A. Cooper . In 1918, he was enrolled in the Mariinsky Theater as a concert pianist.
In 1919 he graduated from the Petrograd Conservatory in piano , and in 1923 - in the class of conducting (by E. A. Cooper) and composition (by M.O. Shteinberg and B.P. Calafati ).
In 1922, in the opera class of the Conservatory, he conducted the opera Mermaid by A. S. Dargomyzhsky. In the spring of 1923, at the opening of the Opera Studio at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he conducted the opera Snegurochka by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov.
From 1918 he worked at the Petrograd (Leningrad) Opera and Ballet Theater (until 1928 - accompanist, then conductor, in 1953-1956 and in 1960-1962 - chief conductor). The performances of the Russian and foreign repertoire were directed by Yeltsin: Rigoletto (1936), Faust (1941), La Traviata (1944), Sadko, Boris Godunov (1954), Prince Igor; “ Semyon Kotko ” by S. S. Prokofiev ( 1960 ) and others.
Since 1919 he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory (since 1935 - professor), was one of the initiators of the creation of the Opera Studio with her. In 1928, as part of the Opera Studio of the Conservatory, he made a trip to Salzburg (Austria) for Mozart celebrations.
In 1940 - awarded the title "Honored Artist of the RSFSR", and in 1954 - "People's Artist of the RSFSR".
He died on February 26, 1970 after a serious and prolonged illness (atherosclerosis 2 tbsp.). He was buried at the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery in St. Petersburg near the grave of his wife, Olga Dmitrievna Golubkova.
