It is known that the Manx king Olaf I in 1134 granted the Farnes monastery a large possession on the island, where the daughter abbey of Rashen arose. In 1147, the abbey came under the control of the Cistercian Order. The construction of the church dedicated to St. Mary was completed by 1257 . However, in 1539, Henry VIII illegally, without the consent of Tinwald , abolished the Abbey of Rashen and small monasteries on the Isle of Man.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the ruins of the abbey gained popularity among tourists, and the building began to be restored. However, by the start of World War II, the abbey was once again in poor condition. In May 1998 , the Rashen Abbey is listed in the Isle of Man's national treasure and an active restoration begins. At the same time, archaeological excavations are carried out, as a result of which many ancient objects were found.

Now the abbey is one of the attractions of the Isle of Man. In a special room you can get acquainted with the history of the abbey and the surrounding lands. From April to October, the abbey is open to tourists. Sound and visual materials are available on the monks' lifestyle. There is a special area for children where they can build church arches and learn the history of the abbey through various games. The abbey also has gardens where tourists can enjoy strawberry and cream teas.

Monk Bridge

Monastic Bridge, Rashen Abbey

Around 1350, the monks built a bridge for crossing the local river Silveburn, for work in the garden. The bridge is now known as Crossag, and it is one of the few surviving pack bridges on the British Isles.
