Biography
Friedrich Wilhelm Riemer was born in the family of an official; in 1787, at the age of 13, he entered the Breslav school of Mary Magdalene. Thanks to his clear and spelling-correct letter, the rector of the gymnasium, Johann Caspar Friedrich Manzo, often instructed him to completely rewrite his writings, reviews and poems. The reward for these services was not only money and textbooks. The rector invited the student to lunch and took with him for walks. Riemer graduated from high school in 1794, receiving the best recommendations from Manzo, then studied philology and theology in Halle . He got the place of a home teacher for the children of Wilhelm von Humboldt and accompanied the scientist's family to Italy . September 4, 1803 Rimer entered the service at Goethe's house in Weimar . From 1803 to 1808, Riemer trained the Goethe's son Augustus . After 1806, Riemer repeatedly accompanied Goethe on trips to Karlovy Vary . Goethe listened to the criticisms of a devoted and hardworking specialist in classical philology, Rimer, including accepting his proposed version of the title for his autobiography .
From 1812 to 1821, Riemer served as professor at the Weimar gymnasium. In 1814, he joined the Weimar Library, and then became the successor to Christian Augustus Vulpius as its head. In his will, Goethe ordered the publication of his collected lifetime works, entrusting it to Rimer and Johann Peter Eckerman .
