Geography

Caloundra is located on the shore of the Coral Sea . Most of the area is a plain , on which there are individual mountains, with a height of 200 to 550 meters. On the west side, the area is bordered by the Blackall Range mountain range, whose individual peaks reach 800 meters. This ridge is part of the Great Dividing Range .

History

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Australian aborigines of the Andyumbi tribes ( English Undumbi ), Nalbo ( English Nalbo ), Dallambarra ( English Dallambarra ), gabi-gabi ( English Gubbi Gubbi ) traditionally lived in the region of Caloundra.

The first European to sail past the shores of Caloundra was James Cook . This was in May 1770 , during his first circumnavigation of the world. Cook named several local landmarks, including Glass House Mountains , a small area west of Caloundra, which stands out against the general plain background with its sharp mountains. After Cook, there were other researchers, including Matthew Flinders , who explored the area. In July 1799, the Flinders climbed Mount Birwa ( English Mount Beerwah ) to explore the area [3] .

In the late 1820s, the first European settlers appeared in the area. They were fugitive convicts who began to live here with local aborigines. In 1868, the government opened for the settlement of land in the area, which were previously inaccessible.

Landsborough Shire County was formed on February 22, 1912 . In 1987, he was given the status of a city, and a new name was also approved - Caloundra .

On March 15, 2008, the city of Caloundra , the county of Noosa and the county of Maroochy were merged into the new local government area of Sunshine Coast .

Tourism

In general, the Kouloundra tourism industry is designed for "local" tourists who come here to relax from Brisbane and the neighboring inland areas of Queensland . Around the city there are several beaches that are quite different from each other in terms of infrastructure, quality of sand, cleanliness and protection from sea waves. In the central part of the city along the coast stretches the Esplanade ( Eng. Esplanade ) - a purpose-built path for hiking. A set of amusements is standard for Queensland's coastal cities - surfing , kitesurfing , boating, sailing and yachting , parachuting and paragliding .

Beaches

  • Golden Beach from the east is protected from the waves by Brybaye Island, so it is safe and convenient for families with children. It is also convenient to go boating , engage in kite surfing and fishing. Thanks to its shallow depths at low tide from Golden Beach, you can almost walk to Brybaye Island.
  • Balkok Beach is located opposite the northern part of Brybaye Island, not far from the central business district of the city. Numerous cafes and restaurants are located nearby.
  • Kings Beach is the central city beach. There are places for picnics, playgrounds, showers and toilets are built. Nearby is a 25-meter salt-filled pool.
  • Shelly Beach is not suitable for swimming due to strong waves and dangerous rocks, although some people like these conditions. At low tide, you can find a large number of marine animals living in coastal waters, such as various crabs and mollusks .
  • Moffat Beach is another small sandy beach of Caloundra with a minimum of amenities and a lack of rescue services.

Attractions

  • Australia Zoo named after Stephen Irwin ( born Australia Zoo ) - one of the most famous zoos in the world, was organized in 1970 by Steve's parents. The zoo is famous for unique shows with live crocodiles and a large number of rare Australian wild animals that cannot be seen in other zoos in the world.
  • Amusement Park "Australian World" and Pub "Itamoga" ( Eng. Aussie World with the Ettamogah Pub ) - "Itamoga" translated from the language of the Aboriginal people means "a place with a good drink."
  • Glasshouse Mountains National Park is located west of the city. Most of the park is a flat plain of volcanic origin with mountains randomly located on it - the remains of extinct volcanoes .

Climate
