Biography
The son of the owner of the hotel in Olten, Bernhard Hammer studied physics and history at the University of Geneva , then law and philosophy at the universities of Freiburg , Berlin and Zurich . In 1844, he received a patent from a lawyer and notary in the canton of Solothurn, and two years later he opened his own company. In 1853, he married Gertrude Yeggi and in the same year was elected chairman of the district court. From 1856 to 1868 he was elected to the cantonal parliament, then was appointed envoy to Berlin. At the end of 1875, four out of seven members of the Federal Council announced their resignation. Hammer was elected to the Council and headed the Department of Finance.
