Mamić Berdei

Mamich-Berdey (? - circa 1556 , Moscow) - the hero of the Mari people , the hundredth prince, a key figure in the 1st Cheremis war (1552-1557), the owner of several hundred volosts on Malaya Kokshaga . Opponent of the accession of the Kazan Khanate to the Russian state , an active opponent of the line of Ivan the Terrible to subordinate the Mari lands .

Activities

In 1552-1554 he led a small group of rebels, on the Volga carried out attacks on Russian ships. By 1555, his detachment had grown to several thousand warriors. In order to recreate the Kazan Khanate, in 1555 he invited Tsarevich Akhpol-Bey from the Nogai Horde , who, however, with his detachment of 300 soldiers did not render assistance to the rebels, but engaged in robberies of the Mari population, for which he was executed with his retinue. After that, Mamich-Berdey himself led the movement of the Volga peoples for the restoration of independence from the Russian kingdom . Under his leadership, there were twenty thousand rebels - meadow Mari , Tatars , Udmurts . In March 1556, he tried to involve the mountain Mari and Chuvash into the rebel movement, but as a result of betrayal he was captured by the centurion Altysh (200 people were killed by Mamich-Berdey) and extradited to the Russian authorities. Executed in Moscow .

Descendants

The children of Mamich-Berdey continued to own his volosts until the start of the 2nd Cheremis War (1571-1574). The son of Mamich-Berdey Kachak was one of the leaders of the liberation movement in the 2nd Cheremis War. Grandson of Mamich-Berdea Jan-Gali .

Memory

The fate of Mamich-Berdey is dedicated to the novel of L. Yandakov . In the Orsha district of the Mari El Republic near the village of Kugunur, a memorial stone was erected in honor of Mamich-Berdey. Mamich-Berdeya is also revered by the Tatars and Udmurts.
