Archduke Maria Cristina , beloved daughter of Empress Maria Theresa , was sympathetic to her cousin Albert and asked her mother for permission for this marriage (although, from a political point of view, he had no benefit). The wedding took place at Hof Castle in the spring of 1766, when the Vienna court mourned the death of Emperor Franz . As a dowry, Prince Albert received the Duchy of Tesinski .
Thanks to his unusually cordial relationship with his wife, Prince Albert was allowed into the Habsburg home circle and spent his whole life in the service of his wife's relatives. In 1765-1781 he governed in Hungary , living alternately in the Bratislava city and in the summer Halburn Palace. Then he was transferred as the viceroy of the Netherlands to Brussels , where he built the Laken Palace (the current residence of the King of Belgium ).
After the invasion of the revolutionary French army into the Netherlands, Albert of Saxony was defeated in the battle of Gemappe and returned to Vienna, where he spent the rest of his life in one of the Hofburg palaces. He was buried with his wife in Kaisergruft . Since their only daughter died immediately after birth, titles, palaces and a huge collection of graphics by Prince Albert were inherited by his adopted son, Archduke Karl Teshensky .
