Biography
At the age of twelve, Edward Stanley inherited from the death of his father, Thomas Stanley , the second Earl of Derby, all his titles and possessions. Until the young count entered into his rights in 1531, all inherited property, with the exception of the widowed part of his mother, Anna Hastings, was at the disposal of King Henry VIII Tudor . Stanley's flax payments and income from property management collectively brought about £ 5,500 to the royal treasury annually, [1] which was a very significant amount. Therefore, custody of the young heir was carried out by the most prominent dignitaries of the English crown, the main of whom was Cardinal Thomas Wolsey , Lord Chancellor of the Kingdom.
Since childhood, being with a powerful royal adviser, Edward soon became a member of the Walsy retinue, in which he took part in his famous embassy in France in 1528. In 1529, Stanley was one of those nobles who gave Pope Clement VII the declaration of Henry VIII on a divorce from Catherine of Aragon .
In 1529 or 1530, the influential nobleman Thomas Howard , the third duke of Norfolk , agreed with Edward on the marriage of the latter with his daughter - Katerina Howard. The marriage was considered approved after its approval by the king, which, after some difficulties, was granted by Henry. However, within a few weeks after the wedding, Katerina contracted the plague and died. Norfolk and Derby were not discouraged and almost immediately agreed on the second marriage of Edward Stanley to Norfolk's half-sister , Dorothy Howard.
In 1532, the third Earl of Derby accompanied Henry VIII at his meeting with the French King Francis I , held in Boulogne . Shortly after this meeting, Edward Stanley was knighted by Bani . In 1536 and 1537, Stanley was one of the leaders in the suppression of the Holy Pilgrimage , a popular uprising that arose against the English Reformation and swept Lincolnshire, and then all of Northern England. In 1542, Stanley participated with a relative - the Duke of Norfolk, in the latter's campaign in Scotland .
Upon the accession to the throne of England by Edward VI in 1547, Edward Stanley was consecrated to the Knights of the Order of the Garter . In 1550, Derby was among the peers who participated in the negotiation of a peace treaty with France and Scotland. However, the next year brought significant changes in his status - he was highly recommended to abolish his possession of the Isle of Man, to which the lord refused and prepared for armed resistance. The reason for this disgrace, as a rule, is indicated by the extremely conservative religious views of Edward Stanley, who was in opposition to the radical Protestant legislation of Edward. [2]
Be that as it may, the accession to the throne of the Catholic Mary I returned to Earl of Derby the crown, he received the title of Lord High Stuart of England and became the Queen's secret adviser . He was appointed commissioner for the trial of Jane Gray and other heretics .
After the next change of monarchs in 1558, Edward Stanley managed to get favor and Elizabeth I , as he was one of those who called to meet the new queen at her entrance to London . Elizabeth retained his position in the Privy Council, and then appointed her lieutenant lord in Cheshire .
Edward Stanley died in 1572 on his estate at Lathom in Lincolnshire, leaving Henry Stanley as the heir to his eldest son.
