Creation History
It was first synthesized in 1866 by the Russian chemist Alexander Zaitsev by oxidizing dimethyl sulfide with nitric acid . Over the next few decades, research on the properties of this compound was not systematic. But it was actively used during the First World War in the hospitals of the Russian army in the treatment of injuries, fractures, and injuries. Non-toxicity and non-cumulativeness in the body contributed well to this.
Interest in dimethyl sulfoxide in the West has greatly increased after its unique solvent capacity was discovered in 1958 . In 1960, industrial production of dimethyl sulfoxide was started. After that, the number of publications devoted to the study of the properties of DMSO has increased dramatically.
General Information
External remedy for local use in inflammatory and some other diseases (mainly in diseases of the musculoskeletal system ).
Pharmacological action
The drug has the ability to penetrate biological membranes , including through skin barriers. The basis for use in inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system is its analgesic and anti-inflammatory action due to inactivation of hydroxyl radicals and improving metabolic processes in the inflammation, inhibition of nociceptive impulses in peripheral neurons, and antagonism of the vascular effects of histamine, bradykinin and prostaglandin E1. The drug has a moderate antiseptic and fibrinolytic effect. It also enhances the penetration through the skin of a number of medicinal substances.
Indications
Dimexidum is used both in undiluted form and in the form of solutions (10-30-70-70%) in double-distilled water to reduce inflammatory and painful phenomena during the complex therapy of rheumatoid arthritis , Bechterew's disease , deforming osteoarthrosis , arthropathy , as well as bruises , sprains , traumatic infiltrates , etc. They are also used in the treatment of erythema nodosum . In combination with heparin, it is used for thrombophlebitis , in combination with chondroitin - in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the joints, in combination with antimicrobial drugs ( linment synthomycin , etc.) - in the complex treatment of systemic scleroderma , furunculosis , erysipelas , acne , etc.
There is evidence of the therapeutic efficacy of Dimexide in rheumatoid arthritis and deforming osteoarthrosis , especially when combined with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs .
Dosing regimen
Apply dimexide in the form of applications. In a solution of the appropriate concentration (usually 50% solution, and for the skin of the face and other highly sensitive areas of the skin - 10-30% solution) wets wipes, which are applied to the affected place for 20-30 minutes 1 time a day; The napkins are covered with plastic wrap , and the top with a cotton or linen cloth. The course of treatment is 10-15 days.
Contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in violations of the antitoxic function of the liver and the excretory function of the kidneys , with angina , marked atherosclerosis , during pregnancy , glaucoma , cataracts . Due to the fact that dimexide can enhance not only the activity, but also the toxicity of some drugs, caution should be exercised when prescribing it simultaneously with other drugs.
Side Effects
Usually the drug is well tolerated, however, in some patients it may cause itchy dermatitis ; some patients perceive the smell of the drug badly ( nausea , retching ), in rare cases, bronchiolospasm is possible.
Special instructions
Some patients feel the smell of garlic in the inhaled air. Given the possibility of individual intolerance to the drug, it is recommended to carry out a drug test for tolerance to it. To do this, Dimexide applied to the skin with a cotton swab moistened in it. The appearance of a sharp redness and itching indicates increased sensitivity.
When an allergic reaction occurs during drug treatment, anti-histamine agents are prescribed.
Interaction
Increases absorption and enhances the effect of ethanol, insulin and other medicines. Compatible with heparin , antibacterial drugs, NSAIDs . Increases the sensitivity of microorganisms to aminoglycoside and beta-lactam antibiotics ; chloramphenicol , rifampicin , griseofulvinu . Sensitizes the body to drugs for general anesthesia .
Physical Properties
Colorless transparent liquid or colorless crystals (melting at a temperature of +18.5 ° C) with a low specific odor (remotely resembling the smell of garlic and fish at the same time). Hygroscopic . Mixed in all proportions with water and alcohol .
The substance is combustible, but bad and weak. [1] [2] When burned, emits irritating or toxic fumes. [2]
Release form
- in glass bottles of 50, 100 ml.
