Biography
The eldest son of William Montague, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and Catherine Grandisson, was born in Somerset. After the death of his father, in 1344, he inherited the title of Earl of Salisbury. According to the agreement, he was engaged to Joan Plantagenet , better known as the Beautiful Virgin of Kent , and in 1348 married her, not knowing that she had already secretly married Thomas Holland . After about a year of marriage, the marriage was annulled by Pope Clement VI in 1349 .
In 1348 he became one of the first knights of the Order of the Garter . For many years he commanded the British troops in France and participated in a number of battles (the Battle of Crescy , Caen , Poitiers , etc.) and served as commander of the rear guard of the army of Edward the Black Prince in 1355 . In 1360 he was one of the nobles who signed the treaty in Brittany (according to which the king of England refused claims to the French throne, but remained the duke of Aquitaine ). For a long time Montague served as an adviser to the king. However, in 1369 he entered the service of John Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster , going on an expedition to the north of France with the aim of concluding peace with France. Montague helped Richard II crush the Wat Tyler uprising in 1381 . In 1385, accompanied Richard on his expedition to Scotland .
In 1392 - 1393, he sold the island along with the title of King of Maine to William le Scrope of Bolton, 1st Earl of Wiltshire .
Montague married Elizabeth (1343–1415), daughter of John Mawn, Baron de Moun of Dunster. After the wedding, the newlyweds moved to the Bisham estate in Berkshire , where they had two daughters and a son, Sir William Montague (c. 1361-1382), who was engaged to Lady Elizabeth Fitzalan, daughter of Richard Fitzalan, 11th Earl of Arundel . However, Sir William died in the tournament, leaving no offspring. After the death of William Montague, 2nd Earl of Salisbury, the title and possession was inherited by his nephew, John Montague, 3rd Earl of Salisbury .
