Prokhorov, Gelian Mikhailovich

After school, he entered the airfield building faculty of the AF Mozhaisky Air Force Engineering Academy , from where he joined the army ^[1] .

He graduated from the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University with honors (1965) in the Department of Middle Ages history as a Byzantinist; studied with G. L. Kurbatov . In 1968 he graduated from the postgraduate program at the Institute of Russian Literature and Art and in the same year he defended his thesis “The Tale of Mitya-Mikhail and its Literary Environment” and was hired there as a senior scientific and technical officer. In 1977 he defended his doctoral thesis "Monuments of the literature of the Byzantine-Russian public movement of the epoch of the Kulikovo battle." Since 1992 - Chief Researcher of the Department of Old Russian Literature, IRLI. He combined his work with a professorship in the universities of St. Petersburg - at the Institute of History, St. Petersburg State University, the RCHGA , and the PDA . Member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society .

G. M. Prokhorov named professors L. N. Gumilev and academician D. S. Likhachev as their main teachers ^[1] . He told me that thanks to Gumilev, “he found the cause of his life and gained the Orthodox faith” ^[1] . In his favorite time, the scientist called the 14th century , in his words, the “golden age of spirituality”: “This is Andrei Rublev and Dmitry Prilutsky , and Sergius of Radonezh , and Kirill Belozersky . All is the pinnacle of holiness ” ^[1] .

Research interests: Old Russian literature and bookishness, Slavic translations from Greek, history of Russian culture, hesychasm . Author of more than 300 scientific papers.

Catherine's daughter died in an archaeological expedition; daughter Christina (born 1972) - icon painter ^[2] , son Leo (born 1996) - entrepreneur.

He died on September 1, 2017 in the intensive care unit of the Pokrovsk hospital. Before his death, the priest communed him with the Holy Mysteries of Christ ^[3] .
