The voivodship was formed as a result of the administrative-territorial reform of 1565-1566. Initially, it consisted of two districts - Minsk and Rechitsky . In 1569, during the negotiations on the conclusion of the Union of Lublin , the Mozyr County, formerly part of the Kiev Voivodeship , which was now under the control of the Kingdom of Poland, was annexed to the Voivodeship.

The Voivodeship bordered on the Brest Voivodeship in the southwest, the Navahrudak Voivodeship in the west, the Vilnius Voivodeship in the northwest, the Polotsk Voivodeship in the north, the Vitebsk Voivodeship in the north, Mstislavsky Voivodeship in the east. In the south, the Voivodeship bordered on the Kiev Voivodeship of the Crown . For some time in the XVII century, the Minsk Voivodeship bordered on the Smolensk and Chernihiv Voivodeships .

In 1772, during the first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, part of the territory of the Rechitsa County was annexed to the Russian Empire .

In 1793, during the second division of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the entire territory of the voivodship was annexed to the Russian Empire .
