Raised with his mother and sister, who later became nuns, Juan was a deeply religious person. In 1511, he married Juan of Aragon, the illegitimate daughter of Alonso , Archbishop of Zaragoza , illegitimate son of Ferdinand Catholic . She died in childbirth in 1520. The second wife of Juan was Francis de Castro. In total, he had seventeen legitimate children from both wives; in addition, one extramarital is known.
Of the eighteen children of Juan, two became cardinals, one archbishop and five daughters went to the monastery. Of the remaining four, daughters married Spanish nobles, sons became governors, military men, and one (Diego) became a priest and fell in battle.
Most famous is his eldest son, Saint Francisco Borgia , the fourth duke of Gandia ; after the death of his wife, he took tonsure and, in view of his friendship with Loyola, was appointed the third general (leader) of the Jesuit Order [3] [4] .
