Early years

Fortunato Baldelli was born on August 6, 1935 , in Walfabbrica , diocese of Assisi (now Assisi-Nocher-Umbra-Gualdo-Tadino), the Italian kingdom.

Baldelli received his degree in Canon Law . He later studied at the Papal Church Academy, in 1964 - 1966 ( diplomacy ).

Priest and papal diplomat

Baldelli was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961, performed by Cardinal Luigi Thralia , Vicar General of Rome . He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1966 , he worked in a nunciature in Cuba in 1966 - 1967 ; Secretary of Nunciature in 1967 - 1970 . Secretary of Nunciature in the United Arab Republic ( Egypt ), 1970 - 1974 .

In 1974, he returned to the State Secretariat of the Holy See , and he was later transferred to the Church's Public Affairs Council. In 1979, he was appointed special envoy with the functions of permanent observer from the Holy See at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg .
