Early years
Fortunato Baldelli was born on August 6, 1935 , in Walfabbrica , diocese of Assisi (now Assisi-Nocher-Umbra-Gualdo-Tadino), the Italian kingdom.
Baldelli received his degree in Canon Law . He later studied at the Papal Church Academy, in 1964 - 1966 ( diplomacy ).
Priest and papal diplomat
Baldelli was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961, performed by Cardinal Luigi Thralia , Vicar General of Rome . He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1966 , he worked in a nunciature in Cuba in 1966 - 1967 ; Secretary of Nunciature in 1967 - 1970 . Secretary of Nunciature in the United Arab Republic ( Egypt ), 1970 - 1974 .
In 1974, he returned to the State Secretariat of the Holy See , and he was later transferred to the Church's Public Affairs Council. In 1979, he was appointed special envoy with the functions of permanent observer from the Holy See at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg .

On February 12, 1983 , Pope John Paul II appointed him the titular archbishop of Bevani (Mevania), and sent him an apostolic delegate to Angola . Baldelli served as an apostolic nuncio in France from 1999 until his appointment to the post of great penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary on June 2, 2009, by Pope Benedict XVI . He also deals with the forgiveness of grave sins and indulgences .
In addition to his duties as a great penitentiary, he was appointed a member of the Congregation for the Canonization of the Saints on July 24, 2010 , where he will serve until his 80th birthday. [four]
Due to the importance of his position as an Apostolic Penitentiary (his predecessors were usually cardinals), Baldelli was to be elevated to cardinal deacon on the next consistory .
Cardinal
On October 20, 2010, during a general audience, in St. Peter's Square , Pope Benedict XVI announced the appointment of 24 new Cardinals, among them Fortunato Baldelli. According to tradition, Archbishop Baldelli will be elevated to the rank of Cardinal Deacon in this consistory . [five]
On November 20, 2010 a consistory was held on which Cardinal Fortunato Baldelli was entrusted with a cardinal hat , and he became a cardinal deacon with the titular deaconess of Sant Anselmo al Aventino . And on November 21, a solemn Mass was held on the occasion of the presentation of the cardinal rings.
