Oak Ridge [1] ( born Oak Ridge ) is a city in the state of Tennessee , USA . It was founded in 1940 as part of the Manhattan Project , a US government nuclear weapons development program during World War II . Oak Ridge housed uranium enrichment facilities .

According to the US Bureau of Statistics , the city occupies a total area of 232.9 km², of which 221.6 km² is land and 11.3 km² is water.
