K-cells are endocrine cells of the mucous membrane of the small intestine , secreting a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide .
K-cells belong to apudocytes and are part of the gastroenteropancreatic endocrine system , which is part of the diffuse endocrine system (synonymous with the APUP system ).
Localization
K-cells are scattered throughout the duodenum and proximal jejunum . [one]
Functions
The main function of K-cells is the secretion of proprotein (“pro-HIP”), consisting of 153 amino acid residues, from which the peptide hormone glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (HIP; the old name is gastroinhibitory peptide ), containing 42 amino acid residues, is subsequently obtained. The stimulators of HIPA secretion are fats and carbohydrates from the stomach into the small intestine of chyme (food digested in the stomach). [one]
