Breed Information
The homeland of this guard dog is considered to be the areas of Portugal, Alentejo and Ribatero . Experts do not exclude her kinship with the Briard and the Pyrenean Shepherd, possibly with the Catalan Shepherd. Shepherds appreciated this dog for its excellent watchdog qualities, unpretentiousness in food and unpretentiousness to any weather conditions. The Portuguese Shepherd was used for grazing not only sheep, but also goats, horses and cows. The Portuguese Shepherd drives cattle by barking while moving, but when the herds grazed in the meadows, it silently bypasses its “possessions” and makes sure that the animals stay close and, if necessary, drive them into the herd of stray.
Character
The Portuguese Shepherd is very curious, at first it behaves with strangers with caution, while being alert, it does not like to bark a lot. With other dogs behaves calmly. A dog of this breed is very loyal to the owner, always ready to do something for him. When keeping a Portuguese shepherd in the family, one should take into account her hardworking and energetic disposition and attractiveness for her participation in dog competitions, and, if necessary, give her the opportunity to graze sheep. She lends herself well to training, she behaves calmly and warmly in the family, of course, if you deal with her taking into account her natural qualities and instincts. It is relatively easy to care for a thick, long and slightly coarse coat, which has almost no undercoat.
