Metacontent Framework

The Meta Content Framework (MCF) is a format specification for structuring metadata about websites and other data . MCF developed Ramanathan V. Guha at Apple Computer between 1995 and 1997. When the research project was closed, Guha left Apple and moved to Netscape , where he adapted MCF to use XML and created the first version of the Resource Description Framework (RDF).

One application using MCF was HotSauce, also developed by Guha, while he was still at Apple. It generated 3D graphics from the contents of the website table and is based on MCF descriptions.

Later, the idea of using metadata comes up with the release of Mac OS X 10.4 , which included Spotlight , a search engine that uses sample data to find it in files.
