The Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by conductor and composer Henri Pansy in 1933, and for the first time gathered for a rehearsal on July 15 with only 20 orchestra musicians, the first concert was held on November 28. Under the direction of Pansy, such soloists as Jacques Thibaut , Arthur Rubinstein , Edwin Fischer , Jozsef Sigheti performed with the orchestra, the collective's repertoire included works by the latest authors - Darius Millau , George Enescu , Bela Bartok . Initially, the orchestra was called the Grand Orchestra of Luxembourg Radio RTL ( French Grand orchestre symphonique de RTL ) and existed on the means of radio RTL. In 1939 , with the Nazi occupation of Luxembourg, radio broadcasting ceased, the orchestra was dissolved, and Pansy emigrated to the United States. At the end of World War II, the work of the orchestra resumed in 1945 under the direction of Pansy, in 1953 the first recording of the orchestra was released.
In 1995, the Luxembourg radio management decided to stop funding the orchestra. To prevent the orchestra from ceasing to exist, the Luxembourg government created a fund named after its founder Henri Pansy, from which it is currently financed.
The main concert venues of the orchestra's performances for a long time were the Bolshoi Theater of Luxembourg and the hall of the Luxembourg Conservatory . Since 2005, the concert hall of the Luxembourg Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte , built in the Luxembourg quarter of Kirchburg, has become the new base of the orchestra.
At the Luxembourg Philharmonic, there is a regularly performing and recording string quartet Lovigny, consisting of musicians from the symphony orchestra.
Among the most significant recordings of the orchestra are complete collections of symphonic works by Yannis Xenakis and Maurice Ohan , music by Gabriel Pierne 's ballet “Sidaliza and the Goat-leg”, works by Guy Roparz , Ernest Bloch , etc.
