Capercaillie (fastener)

Screw with a hex head [1] according to GOST 11473—75

Capercaillie - fastener in the form of a hex or square rod [2] head and a special external thread , forming an internal thread in the hole of the connected object.

Designed to connect massive objects to each other, exerting significant loads on the fastener.

Description

In woodworking, capercaillie is used in cases where a better transmission of force during twisting is required than with a screw . Their diameter is mainly 5-16 mm, and the length is 25-300 mm. To install them in wood, a hole with a diameter of 70% of the diameter of the capercaillie is drilled preliminarily for the length of the chopped portion and for the diameter of the capercaillie for the entire length of its smooth part (neck) . When working with hardwood, the length of the hole should be greater than the length of the capercaillie in order to avoid breaking it. It is screwed with a wrench or wrench into the wood or into the dowel . Previously also used in agricultural engineering .

On railways, to fasten rails to sleepers, capercaillies, called a travel screw, are used : they are screwed with a travel screwdriver , a gas wrench or a travel wrench . Two types of travel screws are mainly used: regular length 24 × 170 mm with a square head and elongated 24 × 195 mm with a hex head [4] .

For fastening large wooden structures, there are so-called threaded rods , similar in shape to capercaillie, only of much greater length and without a thickened neck [5] [6] .

Facade dowel

The frame dowel and the facade dowel consist of a long dowel and a long self-tapping screw , which can have a hexagonal head. They are used for fastening windows , doors , various wooden and metal structures , ventilated facades [7] [8] .

Hexagon cap screws , manufactured in accordance with DIN 571, are widely used for bonding timber, planks, battens and for fixing plumbing to a wooden base. Another name for such fasteners is a plumbing screw [9] .

Anker-shurup or anchor -shurup, used for non-anchor fastening in stone materials, has a shape resembling a capercaillie. Unlike the capercaillie, the anchor screw has a thickened rod and low two-way or single-thread, the neck is not thickened. The shape of the head can be very diverse: hexagonal, semicircular, recessed, and can also be continued with a nut or stud .

In Customs Law

According to the explanation of the HS FEA TS

Capercaillie (crutches) are large screws with square or hexagonal non-slotted heads. They are used for fastening rails to sleepers and for assembling rafters and similar large wooden structures.

- Definition of capercaillie in the customs legislation.

During the customs declaration, the capercaillie made of ferrous metals are identified by the code 7318 11 000 0, and those made of copper or from ferrous metals with copper heads are included in the group of threaded products under the code 7415 39 000 0 [10] (unavailable link) .
