Bible and apocryphal reference
The canonical texts of the Bible are not mentioned.
In the noncanonical Third Book of Ezra (3 Ezra 4: 1 , Ezra 5:20 , 3 Ezra 10:28 ) - an angel sent from God to Ezra to instruct him and explain to him the hidden ways of God. It is also mentioned in the apocryphal book of Enoch , where he is described as one of the holy angels, an angel of thunder and hesitation (Enoch 4:20).
From the “revelation” of the Catholic monk Amadeus of the Portuguese XV century, the cult of Uriel became widespread (along with the cult of the six remaining archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Selafiel, Jehudil, Barahiel) in Catholicism, from where his veneration was transferred to the Life of the Saints by Demetrius of Rostov in the very end of the XVII century; and in Catholicism the veneration of Uriel was completely terminated on the basis of the ruling of the Roman Council of 745.
The Image in the Orthodox Tradition
Uriel rules the heavenly bodies. Uriel is celebrated, along with other archangels - ethereal forces - on November 21 (November 8 according to the Julian calendar).
According to the Tradition of the Orthodox Church, it was set to guard Paradise after the fall and expulsion of Adam . According to the icon-painting canon of the Orthodox Church, this archangel "is depicted holding a naked sword in his right hand against his chest, and a fiery flame in his left" [2] .
Image in Fiction
Archangel Uriel is the character of the three tragedies of the Dutch playwright Jost van den Vondel . In the tragedy "Lucifer" he appears as a powerful warrior, one of the main characters in the war of God against Lucifer. In the tragedy “Adam in Exile,” he appears in the finale as an angel judge exiling Adam and Eve for their fall from Paradise. In the tragedy of Noah, Uriel, right before the flood began, blocks the way for sinners to the ark.
In John Milton's book Paradise Lost , Uriel appears in the third song as the ruler of the Sun. Having assumed the form of an ordinary angel, Satan finds out from him where the newly created world of God is located, where Adam and Eve were placed by the Creator. However, following the flight of the exile, Uriel descends in the sunbeam to Earth, where he warns Gabriel that one of the fallen spirits will try to penetrate into Eden .
