Founded in 1627 by order of King Gustav II Adolf , the Royal Academic Orchestra is the oldest of the current symphony orchestras in Sweden and one of the oldest in Europe . The orchestra is managed by the musical director of the university ( lat. Director director musices ). Over the years, the orchestra was led by such famous Swedish musicians as Hugo Alven and Lars Eric Larsson . Among the most famous pages in the history of the orchestra is the scandal during the performance of King Gustav IV Adolf on April 3, 1800, when the orchestra played the French revolutionary anthem, Marseillaise , which was banned in Sweden.
