Biography
The daughter of a Czech count from the old genus Khotekov . Maid of honor Isabella von Croix - wife of Duke Frederick Teschinsky . Caught the attention of Franz Ferdinand, probably at the ball; for several years their relationship was kept secret. Frequent visits by the Archduke to the house of the Duke of Teshinsky explained his intention to marry the daughter of the Duke.
In 1899, Franz Ferdinand - the heir to the Emperor Franz Joseph - shocked the Austrian court, announcing his intention to marry the 30-year-old Countess Hotek. Despite the vigorous opposition of the emperor and the pope (the position of which was shared by the German Kaiser and the Russian Tsar ), Franz Ferdinand July 1, 1900 in Reichstadt was married to his chosen one. None of the Habsburgs attended the ceremony.
Offspring from the marriage of Franz Ferdinand with a Czech countess by decree of Franz Joseph were excluded from the heirs of the Austrian throne. In all the court ceremonies, Sofia followed the numerous Archduces. Not wanting to put up with this situation, the couple left the courtyard and settled in the castle of Artstetten , where both of them were subsequently buried.
Children
The Duchess of Hohenberg and Franz Ferdinand had three children - the Dukes Maximilian (1902–1962) and Ernst (1904–1954), as well as their daughter Sophia (1901–1990). See Hohenberg for more details.
