Title
The origin of the name Gangnam is simply explained: kan (cor. 강) - “river”, us (cor. 남) - “south”, gu (cor. 구) - “district”, “district”. That is literally: "the area south of the river."
Location on a city map
The northern border of Gangnam is the Khangan River, on the opposite bank of which Yonsangu and Sondong are bordered by the district, in the east the border of the district is the Thanchon River (Kor. 탄천), beyond which the Sonphagu district extends. In the west, the area borders on Sochogu , and the Gangnam-dero motorway (cor. 강남대 로) separates these areas. The southern border of Gangnam-gu in its western part runs along the tops of two small mountains (Kurensan and Damosan), and the eastern part of the border is part of the southern border of Seoul, beyond which are the possessions of the city of Seongnam of Gyeonggi Province.
History
In the time of the Joseon Dynasty, the current Gangnam was a part of Dewangmyeon and Eunzhumyon ( Gwangju County, Gyeonggi Province; in March 2001, the county received city status).
On January 1, 1963, parts of the Gwangju and Shiheen counties of Gyeonggi Province were annexed to Seoul.
On October 1, 1975, Gangnam and Seoghogu were separated from Songdong , and on January 1, 1988, they gained independence from each other. [1] In May 1998, Gangnam became a self-governing state. [one]
General characteristics
Compared to the Seoul areas north of the Hangang River, Gangnam-gu as a residential and business district developed much later, but at present it is the most prosperous place in the country. [one]
The area has a large number of 4-5-star hotels.
In Gangnam, there are 36 kindergartens, 85 regular schools and 2 special schools, 3 universities ( Tondok Women's University and the CHA Medical University campus), as well as 12 public libraries. [four]
4 metro lines (2nd, 3rd, 7th and Bundan line) pass through the Gangnam River territory, the total number of stations is 20.
Attractions
In Gangnam, there are several shopping and entertainment centers that equally attract both metropolitan and provincial residents and guests of the capital. Among them: the shopping and entertainment complex COEX and Apkujeongdon (box 압구정동).
Tehranno Road (box 테헤란로, letter. " Tehran Street " or " Tehran Street ") passes through the center of Gangnam, being one of the main roads in the district. The offices of major South Korean and international corporations are located along it. Sometimes English-speaking foreigners call it the “ Tegeran Valley ” (English Tegeran Valley ) by analogy with the Silicon Valley (English Silicon Valley ) in the United States , due to the number of Internet companies whose buildings here are among them such as: the American portal Yahoo! ", Its Korean competitors are Daum and Naver . Also in Tehran are several of the tallest buildings in South Korea and houses with the country's most expensive real estate. According to Seoul City Hall, about half of the country's venture capital (about 200 billion won or more than 160 million 640 thousand US dollars at an average rate of June 8, 2009 ) was invested in companies located in Tehrano. The area is dedicated to the song " Gangnam Style " by the South Korean artist PSY . The video clip for the song was noted in the Guinness Book of Records , gaining a record number of “likes”, as well as views (more than 3 billion), in the history of YouTube video hosting . In 2016, next to the SOEKH shopping center, it was decided to erect a monument to the Gangnam Style dance in the form of a dancing man. When people approach, the notorious song will automatically turn on. The authorities are hoping in this way to attract more tourists to the area [6] .
