Biography

Francois Bonivar was born in Ciselle , in a noble family of Louis Bonnivard, Seigneur de Lunes from Savoy . Educated in Turin with his uncle Jean Aimé de Bonivar (Jean Aimé de Bonnivard), after which he inherited his position as rector of the monastery of St. Victor, near Geneva [3] . Young Bonivar resisted the attempts of Charles III of Savoy to establish himself in Geneva, for which he was imprisoned in Grolet from 1519 to 1521 .

However, this did not stop Bonivar, and he continued his political activities. In 1530, Francois was attacked by robbers who brought him to the Duke of Savoy, and again he was imprisoned in a dungeon, this time in Chillon Castle [4] . In 1536, Bonivar was liberated by the Bernese . By that time his monastery was already destroyed; in June 1536 he was elevated to the rank of Geneva citizen with a pension [5] , in 1537 he became a member of the Council of Two Hundred.

During his life, François Bonivard was married 4 times, as a result of which he had many debts.

In 1542, he was entrusted with writing the history of Geneva from its very foundation. In 1551, this manuscript was sent to Jean Calvin for corrections, but was published only in 1831 .

Francois Bonivard donated his entire library in 1551 to public use.
