History

Image of the island of Sumbiarstaynur dated to the XIX century.

According to official historical documents, Sumbiarstein was one of the highest islands in this part of the archipelago. It rose seventy feet (21 meters) above sea level. The shape of the rock resembled a monk , for which it received its name. Sumbiarstyainur was described by early writers of the Faroe Islands as an important natural object of navigation, serving in this capacity for hundreds of years.

In shallow water around the island, dangerous currents and whirlpools formed, which caused great inconvenience to local sailors. In 1673, Pastor Lucas Jacobson Debes gave a graphic description of the current forming around the island of Sumbiarstyinur. The pastor also claimed that at this point his compass reflected erroneous data.

In 1800, Pastor Jyirgen Landt also described the whirlpool and the island itself, whose height was reminiscent of a monk who has a red clay neck, a body and a head made of dark gray stone or basalt.

On May 28, 1885, the Danish Minister for Maritime Affairs reported that most of the island of Sumbiarstaynur collapsed, adding that the Faroe Islands lost one of their most striking objects of natural origin, which was an important element of navigation for sailors, an object of adoration and inspiration for many local artists and writers.

Now the dangerous reef is almost completely submerged, only the highest points of it are above the water.
