Born in the USA, from where his parents returned to their homeland in Sweden in 1929 . He was educated at the Royal Higher School of Music in Stockholm and Uppsala University . After 1949 he continued to study modern music - in Darmstadt , Baroque music - at the Basel School of Singing ( lat. Schola Cantorum Basiliensis ) by Paul Sacher and conducting - by Igor Markevich and Jean Morel at the Juilliard School and Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center .

In 1954 - 1962 he headed the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra , in 1962 - 1968 - Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra , in 1967 - 1977 - Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra , in 1977 - 1982 - Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra . In 1975 - 1985 he was the chief conductor of the Saxon State Capella in Dresden , with whom he recorded the works of Richard Strauss and the Beethoven and Schubert symphonies. In 1985 - 1995, he led the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra , receiving two Grammy Awards with him. In 1996 - 1998 he was the main conductor of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra , in 1998 - 2005 - the Gewandhaus Leipzig Orchestra .
