Yalovets, Henry

Heinrich Jalowiec ( German: Heinrich Jalowetz ; December 3, 1882 , Brno - February 2, 1946 , USA ) - Austrian conductor and musicologist .

In 1904 - 1908 studied in Vienna with Arnold Schoenberg and Alexander von Zemlinsky , becoming one of the key figures in the circle of avant-garde-minded musicians around Schoenberg. Arranged the Schoenberg symphonic poem "Pelleas and Melisande" for piano four hands [3] . In 1911 he graduated from the musicology course at the University of Vienna with Guido Adler .

He worked as a tutor and conductor in Regensburg , Danzig , Stettin , Vienna, Cologne , in 1920 helped Zemlinsky in the formation of the newly created German Academy of Music and Theater in Prague [4] . In 1935 he conducted the premiere of Symphonietta Zemlinsky in Prague.

In 1938 he emigrated to the United States and until his death headed the music program of Black Mountain College . According to modern researchers, thanks to Yalovets and his colleagues, also refugees, the atmosphere in the college was saturated with the practices and ideas of Vienna at the turn of the century, and future leading American composers, starting with John Cage, came there for this [5] .
