1919 Uprising
Like many left-wing liberals and social democrats , Emil Serve advocated the establishment of republican rule in Luxembourg. At the same time, the activity of the Grand Duchess Maria Adelaide during the German occupation was seen as pro- German by the majority of the politically active population. This prompted the Liberal League and the Social Democratic Party on December 6, 1918 to join forces for the establishment of republican rule.
At the end of December 1918 , an uprising broke out in several parts of the Luxembourg army and, taking advantage of it, on January 9, 1919 , the Republicans organized the Committee of Public Salvation , whose chairman was elected 72-year-old Emil Serve. Despite the fact that, according to general opinion, Servé was also to become the first president of the Republic of Luxembourg, opinions differed on a number of other issues: for example, right-wing liberals favored unification with Belgium . However, at the request of the Luxembourg government , French troops intervened and on January 10, 1919 the uprising was crushed.
