Biography

According to medieval genealogies , Tuatal Maelgarb was the son of Kormak Kaekh, the son of Koyrpre, the son of Niall of the Nine Hostages . In the Irish annals of his acts, only the battle against the Kianhacht tribe “between the two estuaries” in 535 is mentioned. [1] It is believed that this victory affirmed the dominance of the Wye Neil dynasty over the Brega Valley (modern counties of Meath, Louth and Dublin).

In the lives of the saints , especially St. Kiaran of Clonmaknois, there are several legends about Tuatal. Tuatal expelled his future successor, Diarmait Poppy Kerbayl , and he took refuge in the monastery of Klonmaknois , helping St. Kiaran to build cells [2] . The saint said: "Put my hand on your hand, and you will be above the men of Ireland in the rank of High King."

According to the legend told in the Annals of Klonmaknois , Mael Mor, Diarmite ’s uterine brother , asked his brother for his black horse, picked up a spear and put a dog’s heart on it. To the warriors of Tuatal, he said that he wanted to show the king the heart of the exile Diarmait. He was admitted to Tuatal, Maelmore inflicted a mortal blow with a spear and was immediately killed by the guards. So the next morning after the prediction of St. Kiaran Diarmite, poppy Cairbill became the supreme king of Ireland [3] [4] .
