Overview
The film is a sequel to the 1970 documentary Elvis: Everything As It Is . The film was shot during a series of tours of the musician, scheduled for 15 cities in the United States in April 1972 . The working title of the film is Standing Room Only (the album - the soundtrack was originally planned to be released with this working title of the film, but nevertheless it was never officially released). "Elvis on Tour" is Presley's only film not accompanied by the release of the soundtrack . The film also contains footage and photographs of Elvis's performances at the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956 .
According to the book “Elvis: His Life from A to Z” by Fred L. Worth and Steve Tamerius, among the people who worked on the film, there was a famous American film director , producer and screenwriter Martin Scorsese , who was responsible for the film editing , as well as David Draper , who worked on the film " Mr. Universe . " The film was directed by Robert Abel and Pierre Adage .
Elvis on Tour won the 1972 Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary . In the filmography of Presley , this film was the only one to win any film award. According to reports, during the evening award ceremony, the musician was at his Graceland estate. When Presley found out about the victory, he ran out of the house shouting: “Son of a bitch, we won the Golden Globe!” ( Eng. Son Of a Bitch, we've won the Golden Globe ). [one]
Despite the numerous offers of acting roles that came to the actor over the next few years, including the offer to shoot in the 1976 film “A Star Was Born ” with the participation of Barbra Streisand , the musician did not continue his acting career. Images from the film "Elvis on Tour" were later used in the documentary - " This is Elvis " , released in the early 1980s .
Contents
The film begins by showing one of the musician’s performances, in which Presley performs the song Johnny B. Goode . Elvis was shot at the moment when he nervously waits behind the scenes for the stage and soon appears in front of an enthusiastic audience. The film is widely used mirror effect. [2]
| “My dad saw a lot of people who played guitars, overeat, and didn't work. Therefore, he told me: you must decide whether you will play the guitar or be an electrician . I have never seen a guitarist who was worth anything. ” [3] - Elvis Presley , introduction to the movie Elvis on Tour |
Part of the concerts shown in the film are mounted with rare shots of the Ed Sullivan show , the musician’s army life and shots in which Elvis is dressed in his famous concert costume in gold . [2]
Further, the musician shows up while working on recording a Seperate Ways song in a recording studio and other songs that became famous in the 1970s . Particular attention is paid to the musician’s exits from hotels in which he stayed during tours and concert halls, as well as to scenes of the musician’s kisses with his especially passionate fans . Many of the movie kiss scenes released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have been edited and also shown for the first time in this film. [2]
The film focuses most on nostalgia and the good music of bygone years. [2] As with many Elvis shows, almost every action ends with the final performance of the song “ Can't Help Falling in Love ” . At the end of the concert, Elvis quickly goes backstage, where he is waiting for his limousine , which, according to the tradition of the show with the musician, takes him right after the performance. Many of the episodes of the film are accompanied by a melody - “ Memories ” , which has become an excellent musical accompaniment to what is happening on the screen.
