History

In the Middle Ages, Le Canois was the residence of the Counts of Gennegau . In the XII century, Count Baldwin IV built a palace here, in which his descendants lived until the XV century, and surrounded the city with fortress walls.

In 1169, Le Kenois was visited by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa , who arrived here at the wedding of Count Baldwin V and Margarita of Flanders .

In 1345, the county of Gennegau, together with Le Canois, passes to the family of the Wittelsbach , and in 1433 it enters the Duchy of Burgundy .

Since 1477, the city is French, but its affiliation has long been contested by the Habsburgs . King Francis I builds here in the XVI century a fortress, which was modernized in 1659 by a military engineer Vauban at the direction of King Louis XIV .

During the War of the Spanish Succession, Le Canois was occupied by Austrian forces under the command of Eugene of Savoy .

In 1793, during the First Coalition War , the Austrian army of Prince Koburgsky captured a city as a result of a short siege . In the summer of next year, the roles of opponents changed, and as a result of a new siege, the city returned to the control of the Republicans again [1] [2] .

During the First World War in 1914 it was captured by the Germans, liberated by New Zealand troops in 1918 .

During the Second World War, was again occupied by the Germans, then returned to France.
