Biography
He performed in amateur performances with Andrei Smirnov , who later became a well-known film director.
He graduated from the Higher Theater School. M.S.Schepkina in 1963 . Classmates at the school were Victor Pavlov , Vitaly Solomin , Oleg Dal . Until 1968 - actor of the Academic Maly Theater . But at a time when the actor was preparing a big role ( Khlestakov in The Examiner ), accidentally abandoned words caused a scandal, and he urgently had to leave the Maly Theater. The first role - in the film by Ivan Pyryev " Our mutual friend " (1961). The comedy film “The Head of Chukotka ”, where Kononov played Alexei Bychkov, should be considered a bright start to a film career. In the same year, Mikhail Ivanovich played Thomas in the historical and philosophical film of Andrei Tarkovsky " Andrei Rublev ."
The actor gained the most popularity by playing the young teacher Nestor Petrovich Severov in the television series Alexei Korenev's " Big Change ", although he initially refused this role because he did not like the script.

In the last years of his life, the actor rarely appeared in public and lived in the village of Butyrki, near Moscow, and starred a little. After spending ten years in the village, he bought a small apartment on the Moscow outskirts.
In the 2000s, he wrote a memoir , but not a single publisher accepted it for publication.
In the last years of his life, he suffered a heart attack , thrombophlebitis and was an invalid of group II [4] . Two weeks before the death of Kononov, he went to hospital with pneumonia . However, in the hospital, his condition only worsened: he did not have the money to purchase the necessary medicines [5] . Against the background of pneumonia, Kononov developed heart failure and thromboembolism . In the evening of July 15, he was transferred to the cardiopulmonary resuscitation department, but the artist could not be saved: on the morning of July 16, 2007, he died of thromboembolism.
The body of the actor, according to the will, was cremated, and the urn with ashes was buried in Moscow , in the columbarium of the Vagankovsky cemetery .
Personal life
Mikhail Kononov was married (since 1969), married 38 years to his wife Natalya Pavlovna Kononova [19 ] , they did not have children.
