Previously, 4 subspecies were isolated in the form, but due to the revision of the subspecies of the ophthalmic ants in P. m. chocoanus (from the east of Panama and north-west of Colombia ) no differences from the nominative subspecies ( P. m. mcleannani ) were found - P. m. chocoanus became synonymous with P. m. mcleannani [5] . There are 3 subspecies in the form:
- Phaenostictus mcleannani saturatus - east of Honduras south to Costa Rica and the West of Panama [5] ;
- Phaenostictus mcleannani mcleannani - eastern and central part of Panama and northwest of Colombia [5] ;
- Phaenostictus mcleannani pacificus is southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador [5] .
