Floating Island (novel)

“Floating Island” ( fr. L'Île à hélice ) is a fantastic novel by Jules Verne , written by him in 1895 . The novel tells the story of a musical quartet (four friends Sebastien Zorn, Ivernes, Fraskolen and Penshin), due to a cunningly deceit that turned out to be on a huge floating island-ship, which has become home to American millionaires and constantly floats in the Pacific Ocean. The island of Standard Island is constantly in danger: the invasion of wild animals, the attack of Malay pirates, the struggle of two wealthy families for power, splitting the island into two irreconcilable parts, and finally, the hurricane completes what was started in the literal sense of the word. Standard Island is sinking, and its inhabitants are fleeing to New Zealand at the last moment. The novel contains detailed descriptions of the archipelagos of the Pacific Ocean.

Standard island

Standard Island ( Eng. Standard-Island - Model Island [1] ) - a fictional artificial floating island . Of all the fictional vehicles, Verna Standard Island is the largest: its size is 7 by 5 kilometers. During the writing of the novel, the author consulted with his brother Paul Verne, the captain of the voyage [2] .

Design

The island is oval in size 5 by 7 km and with an arc length of 18 km. It is assembled from 260,000 steel pontoons that are bolted together. The dimensions of each of the pontoons are as follows: 10 meters in length and width, and 16 meters in height. The draft of the island is 10 meters. In order to avoid adhesion of mollusks, the underwater surface of the island is covered with a special composition [1] . The upper surface of the island is covered with earth (the only exception is the territory occupied by the capital of the island - Billion City).
