The Lurkers, announced as “the British response to the Ramones ” [2] debuted in 1977 with the single “Shadow”, which was the first release of the only-educated Beggars Banquet Records . [3]
After Baysika replaced Kim Bradshaw (ex- The Saints ), the band released the singles “Ain't Got a Clue” (# 45, UK) and “I Don't Need to Tell Her” (# 49 UK), followed by the debut album Fulham Fallout (# 57 UK, 1978). [4] After releasing two more albums, The Lurkers split up, after which they reunited several times. [5] [1]
The group continues to perform (consisting of BASIC, guitarist Dave Kemp and drummer Nelly), but the basis of its repertoire is the material of early albums, which British rock critics ranked as classics of early punk rock. [6]
In the United States, The Lurkers remained virtually unknown, and the American press generally rated them as a “minor and lightweight” punk band that had nothing more than “glimpses of grandeur”. [7]
In January 2009, The Lurkers performed 8 shows with Buzzcocks , performing in the first section of the UK stage of their tour. [eight]
