Biography

Saint Emmeram, a native of Poitiers , went to Bavaria at the invitation of the local Duke Theodon I. He became abbot of the monastery in Regensburg and head of the local diocese . Theodon called Emmeram to his court. Emmeram carried out missionary work for three years. During this time, he gained a reputation as a pious person.

According to legend, Uta (or Ota), the daughter of the duke, confessed to Emmeram that she was expecting an illegitimate child. The father was one of the Sigipaldus, the courtiers of her father. Having taken pity on the girl, Emmemer advised her to call him his father, whom everyone respected, hoping thereby to alleviate her shame. Soon after, Emmeram unexpectedly went on a pilgrimage to Rome . At this time, Uta declared Emmeram the father of her child.

When Duke Theodon and his son Lantbert learned of Uta's pregnancy, Lantbert chased after the bishop. He caught up with Emmeram at Helfendorf . It was the old way to Rome, the road between Salzburg and Augsburg . By order of Lantbert, Emmeram was tied to a staircase and brutally tortured, cutting off his body in pieces, starting with his fingers. His eyes were gouged out and his nose was cut off. Still alive, with a mutilated body, he asked for water from his assistant Vitalis, who found him lying in a pool of his own blood. Vitalis was surprised that in this state he asks for water, not death. To this, Emmeram answered that death can neither be rushed nor put off. Vitalis and his assistant decided to bring the body of the saint to Aschheim . On the way, Emmeram asked to put him on the ground, where he gave up his spirit, and at that moment those present at his death saw a bright radiance illuminating his body. This place was located at the intersection of four roads, and according to legend, it is evergreen to this day. Later, a small chapel was built on this site. Since the death of Emmeram on September 22, heavy rain has been falling for forty days. When Uta did tell the truth, Emmeram’s body was moved to Regensburg. And again a miracle happened: having reached the Danube, the raft independently sailed against the current to Regensburg.

On the site of the grave of a martyr in Regensburg, around 739, a Benedictine monastery was laid, which was consecrated in his honor ( Monastery of St. Emmerams ).
