The son of a farmer raising cabbage . He graduated from the University of Wisconsin ( 1915 ), where he defended his thesis ( 1918 ) and later taught until 1964 .
Walker was a prominent specialist in the pathology of vegetable crops ; he belongs, in particular, to the textbook Diseases of Vegetable Crops ; 1935 , 1952 . Studying the genetic resistance of plants to various diseases and ways to increase it, Walker made a significant contribution to the development of American vegetable growing .
Walker's work was highly recognized. In 1945 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , in 1960 he was awarded the degree of Honorary Doctor of the University of Gottingen . In 1978, Walker, along with became the first winner of the prestigious International Wolf Science Award .
