Content
Story
The narration is conducted in the first person, in the style of the memoirs of a mathematician, Professor Peter E. Hogarth, who was involved in a Pentagon secret project conducted in the Nevada desert, where scientists worked on decoding what looked like a signal sent from outer space. In the course of the story, Hogarth - or rather Lem himself - reveals to the reader many disputes at the intersection of cosmology and philosophy: from discussions of epistemology, systems theory, information theory and probability, through the ideas of evolutionary biology, and possible forms and motives of extraterrestrial intelligence, with digressions in side of the ethics of research sponsored by the military, to the limits of human science, limited by human nature, subconsciously projecting itself onto the analysis of any unknown object.
Editions
In the USSR, a novel in Russian was published in 1971 in the translation of A. Gromova and R. Nudelman, under the name “Voice of the Sky” [1] . In this edition, the scene of the execution of Jews, arguments about the arms race [2] , and a number of philosophical reflections were excluded.
