Biography

Karl Schenk was born in 1823 in the family of Christian and Verena Schenk. At the age of 11, he remained an orphan and began to live in Korntal ( Germany ). In 1839 he returned to Bern , where until 1842 he studied at school. Then he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Bern . In 1845 he became a pastor in Schüpfen . In 1848, he married Elise Kähr. They had 9 children, two of whom died in infancy. On March 23, 1855, he was elected to the Great Council of the Canton of Bern, after which he moved from Schüpfen to Bern. The following year, Schenk became a member of the Council of Cantons of the Federal Parliament. He was also the successor to Jacob Dubs as president of the Swiss Red Cross from 1873 to 1882 .
