Carpentra [2] [3] ( French Carpentras ) is a city in France located in the south-east of the country, in the Vaucluse department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . It enters the Karpantra district , forming 2 cantons - Karpantra-North and Karpantra-South . The area of the city is 37.92 km².

History
Karpantra is known as a local shopping center from the 5th century BC. e. At that time, it was a settlement of the Gallic tribe of Meminians , where visiting Greek and Carthaginian merchants bought wheat, honey, skin and cattle. In Roman times, it was called Carpentoracte, the Roman arch of Triumph and the city gate were preserved in the city.
Since 1274 it belongs to the papal possession of Comte Venessen . In 1309 - 1314, Pope Clement V lived in Carpentra. During the papacy of Innocent VI , in the second half of the XIV century, the city was surrounded by a fortress wall with 32 towers and 4 gates. From 1320, Carpantra was the center of the papal county of Comte Venessen, until 1790 , when it was annexed to France. Until 1801, it was also the center of the bishopric of Karpantra.
Starting from the 13th century, the city was one of the centers of French Jews who fled here, to papal possessions, from the persecution of King Philip IV the Beautiful . In 1367, the synagogue , the oldest in France (reconstructed in 1743 ) , was built in Carpentra. In it, and currently held worship.
Traditions
Carpantra is famous for its official weekly truffle market, which runs Friday morning in the winter months of November to March. [4] The city’s traditional confectionery is Berlingo candy, a small hard candy with white stripes. Initially, they were made from syrup left over from canning fruits.

- Church of St. Siffredius - the former cathedral (until 1801) of the Catholic diocese of Carpantra, the first bishop of which was St. Siffredius (+ VII century).
- Arch in Karpantra - an antique arch of the 1st century , a historical monument from 1840.
- The Engambertin Library is France's oldest municipal library.
- Canal Karpantra - an irrigation canal of the XIX century , coming from the river Durance .
In the movie Inquisition, the action takes place in the city of Karpantra.
