Geography
The city is located on the slopes of the mountains descending to the sea itself. The population is mainly engaged in tourist services, as well as coastal fishing. The climate is typical Mediterranean: hot and dry summers, mild and wet winters. The region produces oranges, lemons and pomegranates, as well as other fruits and vegetables. The peaks of the surrounding mountains are covered with olive groves and thorny shrubs.
For tourists, many small hotels, guest houses, cafes and restaurants have been built. In the area there are many private villas owned by Germans and English.
Coastal waters are considered one of the most attractive places for diving on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.
Opposite the bay is the Greek island of Kastelorizo - the distance from port to port is about 7 km. In the summer season, tourist boats run between the cities several times a week.
History
In the 4th century BC e. on the site of the present city of Kas, the port of Antifellos was founded [1] . It was part of the ancient city of Fellos. Antifellos - meant "opposite Fellos". In ancient times, the city was one of the important shopping centers of ancient Lycia . From here, timber was exported from the famous cedar forests of Lycia.
From 1852 to 1923 on the site of the ancient port was the predominantly Greek port town of Andifli. When the Greek population left these places in 1923 , the city got its modern name, which means “eyebrow” in Turkish, like which it bends around a small bay with an arc.
Population
According to the 2007 census, 5.922 people live in the city, and 49.629 people live with the surrounding villages.
Attractions
Despite the ancient history, the city has relatively few ancient ruins. The remains of an ancient temple (1st century BC) and a small Hellenistic theater for 3,000 spectators, with 26 rows of seats, have been preserved.
100 m higher on the slope above the theater, a Doric tomb (IV century BC) is embedded in the rock, decorated with images of 21 dancers. An even more interesting tomb is the two-story Lycian tomb of Leo, located on the opposite end of the city, at the upper end of the boutiques and expensive antique shops. The name of the tomb was given by four architectural relief ornaments made in the form of lion heads.
