Clefia

CLEFIA (from French clef “key”) is an encryption algorithm developed by Sony Corporation as a safe alternative to AES for the protection of copyright and DRM systems. The algorithm consists of two components: part of the key schedule and part of data processing. The algorithm complies with the AES cipher requirements: Block size - 128 bits (16 bytes), supported key length - 128, 192 and 256 bits. The number of rounds depends on the key length and is respectively 18, 22 or 26 rounds and 36, 44 and 52 used subkeys. The algorithm uses key whitening with additional subkeys before and after data processing.

The stated requirements for the algorithm were:

  • Security
  • Execution speed
  • Easy to implement on low-cost equipment

The algorithm was the first cipher to use DSM ( Diffusion Switching Mechanism ) technology to increase security against linear and differential cryptanalysis.

The developers also took into account the existence of a new type of attack - algebraic and claim the resistance of the CLEFIA cipher to them.

Two types of lookup tables are also used to protect against a number of attacks.

In 2012, ISO and IEC organizations incorporated PRESENT and CLEFIA algorithms into the ISO / IEC 29192-2: 2012 international lightweight encryption standard. [1] [2] [3]
