Biography

genus. March 10, 1833 in Guadix from noble parents who lost their fortune during the war of independence; intended for entry into the spiritual rank and brought up in the seminaries of his hometown.

He also listened for a short time at the University of Granada with lectures on jurisprudence and philosophy, but his natural inclination made him a writer and poet: in 1853 he broke up with his parents to live in Cadiz as a journalist, and when the revolution broke out in 1854, he went to Madrid , where he soon gained fame and took a prominent position as leader of the anti-bourbon democratic Colonia granadina.

In 1859, he participated in an African campaign under the command of O'Donnell, in 1863 he traveled to Italy and France, in 1864 he was a deputy from Guadix in Cortes, in 1868 he took part in the revolution and in the battle of Alcole.

Alarcon is an excellent lyricist, romantic and feuilletonist: his works reflect spiritual warmth, naturalness and folk spirit. Especially successful are his humorous and light satirical poems, as well as prosaic things; almost all of his works are subjective and are in some ways autobiographies.

Until 1859, Alarcon printed in various magazines and newspapers only articles of a political and literary content, of which others attracted general attention.

“Diario de un testigo de la guerra de Africa” (Madrid, 1860, 2nd ed., 8 vols., 1880) - the first book he published was very successful, followed by less successful travel descriptions “De Madrid à Nàpoles” (Mad., 1861, 2nd ed. 1878), La Alpujarra (Mad., 1874, 2nd ed. 1882), Viajes por España (Mad., 1883).

Around the same time, the first collection of his short stories and short stories (Cantos, articulos y novelas, 4 vols, 1859) was published, which consolidated the fame of one of the first novelists in Spain.

As a novelist, Alarcon combines the best features of the old Spaniards - rich imagination, subtle observation and humor - with the developed mind and taste of a modern European. His best work is considered to be "El sombrero de très picos" (1874) - a brilliant picture of the provincial life, painted with Spanish color.

Subsequently, Alarcon wrote several great novels, which are very successful in his homeland, but are not very high placed outside Spain.

These are:

  • "El Escàndalo" (Mad., 1875; 10th ed. 1887) - a religious and philosophical novel, which became the subject of passionate attacks,
  • "La pródiga" (Mad., 1881),
  • "El capitan Veneno" (Mad., 1881);
  • the best of them is considered "El niño de la bola" (Madr., 1880).

His lyrical works are collected in the book “Poesias serias y humoristicas” (Madr., 1870, 3rd ed. 1885). Collections of his critical studies and witty feuilleton appeared under the title “Amores y amorios” (Madr., 1875); “Cosas que fueron” (Mad., 1871; 2 ed. 1882); “Novelas cortas” (2nd ed., Mad., 3 vols., 1884 et seq.); Juicios literanos y artisticos (1883).

Alarcon did not write for the scene since his first drama, “El hijo prodigo” (Madr., 1857), thanks to the machinations of his literary enemies, failed with great noise.

In 1884, Alarcon issued his literary testament ("Historia de mis libros") and has since not taken up the pen.

M.V. Watson translated it into Russian “Tales and Stories” (St. Petersburg, 1886).
