Biography

Vera Lyadova was born in an artistic family. Father - Alexander Nikolaevich Lyadov - famous ballet conductor of the imperial theaters; his brother Konstantin Lyadov is the chief bandmaster of Russian opera in St. Petersburg. Vera's cousin Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov - Russian composer, conductor, teacher, cousin V.K. Lyadova-Sariotti - actress of the Alexandrinsky Theater.

Since 10 years, she studied at the Imperial St. Petersburg Theater School. In 1865, Lyadova was accepted into the ballet troupe of the St. Petersburg Imperial Theaters. As noted in the sources, her popularity was greatly enhanced by her “magnificent stage appearance, innate musicality, beautiful timbre voice, excellent choreographic data, humor and a special chic of a cascading opera actress” [1] . She equally successfully performed in operetta, and in drama, and in ballet.

Lyadova's debut - the role of Annie in the vaudeville "Barskaya arrogance and Pansies" on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater. In 1868, she plays at the Kamenoostrovsky Theater in the vaudeville "The Mill in Marley" and in several plays of the Krasnoselsky Theater .

The success and recognition of Lyadova brought the operetta " Beautiful Elena " by Jacques Offenbach . Staged at the Alexandrinsky Theater in 1868, two years after the premiere at the Mikhailovsky Theater, the play survived forty-two performances here in its first season.

The spectator went to the Alexandrinsky Theater “on Lyadova”. Her name on the poster provided not only a complete collection, but each time - a triumph, the triumph of the “Queen of the Kankan”. Tickets for the performance were obtained miraculously - only by appointment in the theater office. Immediately after the premiere, a critic of the “ Fatherland Notes ” wrote: “The theater is constantly full, tickets are bought with the greatest difficulty, they are paid twice, triple, five times against the real price (one young lady assured me that if he had a five-ruble ticket to the mezzanine for the third performance, then he would immediately sell it for fifty rubles!). Everyone is in a hurry to see the Russian “Beautiful Elena” [2] . According to M. O. Yankovsky’s exact definition, “starting with the production of The Beautiful Elena, the St. Petersburg imperial drama turns into a real operetta theater for 5-6 years, if we evaluate this stage from the point of view of repertoire saturation” [3] .

After The Beautiful Elena, Lyadova plays in weaker operettas, specially translated or renewed for her: “The Kingdom of Women”, “Weak String”, “We All Want Love”, “Little Faust”, “Little Birds ”, etc. However, according to contemporaries, and in these worthless plays she was inimitable.

She was married to a ballet dancer and choreographer Lev Ivanov [4] . They lived in marriage for 10 years, but he was unhappy, as a result of which in 1869 a divorce followed. They had three children: the first-born died in infancy, and the youngest was born deaf and dumb [5] .

Vera Lyadova was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox Cemetery [6] . In the 1930s, the burial was transferred to the Necropolis of Artists of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg .
