Frederiksborg ( Danish ) is a breed of domestic horses . Known since the end of the 16th century , it is the oldest Danish breed. The name is derived from the name of Frederiksborg Castle, which housed the Royal Stud . The breed was of great importance during the XVII-XIX centuries, at this time the horses of this breed were actively exported from Denmark to form and improve the local horse breeds of many countries [1] . These horses were also imported to Russia at the Khrenovskaya stud farm for the metalization of Bityug mares [2] .
The horses of the Fredericksborg breed were actively used as riding, draft and in military affairs [3] . In the process of industrialization of the XIX century, the need for horses of this breed decreased, as a result of which the population size fell. Currently, horses of this breed are mainly used in horse riding .
The modern population of the Fredericksborg breed contains impurities from other horse breeds. The exact population size is unknown. According to estimates, at the beginning of the XXI century there are about 160-300 mares capable of breeding [3] .
The color of these horses is bay, the tail and mane are usually lighter, there are white spots on the legs and head. The body is proportionate and well built [1] .
